Great tribute to Hasebe -- one of my favorite directors along with Masaru Konuma, Norifumi Suzuki, Immamura, and Yasuzo Masumura.

Both "Bloody Territories" and "Assault" are excellent movies, and extremely innovative.

A title not mentioned is "Raping" (Yaru, '78), a pink film that features an extraordinary sequence utlizing two-way mirrors in a love hotel. Hasebe's command of the medium in this stanza of the movie is masterful. And, as usual, his love for jazz scoring is evident.

It's also worth mentioning his '73 entry in the "Female Prisoner Scorpion" series: "Grudge Song". Less stylized, but more erotic than the other entries, it boasts an ultra-expressive use of color, and the director's trademark "fallen angel" characters.

Mark - I can almost guarantee that you're going to really enjoy Black Tight Killers if you haven't seen it yet! I was lucky to catch it on DVD when it was first released about 9 or 10 years ago and it's been one of my favorite Japanese films ever since. I enjoy your blog by the way and just added it to my blog roll.

adgy - Many thanks adgy! Your comment was a surprise since I don't think we've chatted since I left livejournal about 3 years ago, but thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you enjoyed my Hasebe tribute.

Sad news indeed, but at least your article means I've now got Black Tight Killers to look forward to. How many more fantastic Japanese genres are out there? These films are really something else.

Hi Bob! I think you'd really enjoy Bloody Territories. Assault! on the other hand is a hard one to recommend since it's a really brutal film, but I'd be curious to know what you thought of it if you did see it.

Hopefully I'll get around to writing about Kobayashi soon. I've got a lot of interesting and rare materials to share so I may just wait until Nov and throw him a big bday tribute. :)

Hi Kimberly,

I didn't realize Hasebe was still an active director, so that makes the news doubly sad. "Black Tight Killers" is, in a word, awesome...

I haven't seen "Bloody Territories" or "Assault!", so in honour of Hasebe I'm going to track them down.

Just don't forget that article about Akira Kobayashi though...B-)

Thanks a lot, Michael! I'm still recovering from my recent trip and suffering through a bad case of insomnia, but I'm glad I was able to participate in the blogathon even if it was under sad circumstances.

I was really shocked to read about Hasebe's death at your blog. Hopefully my piece will shine a small light on his work.
